Aesthetics of framing.

When looking at a work of art in need of framing, it is worth spending some time considering some important aspects of presentation in a manner that best suits the work.

At Artisan Frames we make bespoke hand finished picture frames which are designed specifically for each individual work of art.

When the work is first presented for framing there are a few details that we go through with the Artist about the nature of the work and what might best suit it in terms of framing. Often Artists and Gallery owners will have strong ideas on the matter as they might wish to see the finished piece in the context of other works on exhibition or display.

For contemporary work a square edge section of moulding is often requested and then custom finished to requirement. At our workshop we have our own spray shop and offer a Ral or Pantone colour matching service in a variety of sheen finishes from 10% matt to 80% Gloss.

Limeing frames still remains very popular in Ireland and has never seemed to go out of vogue despite new machine finished that have become available over the last few years.
We offer Gesso frames as a good alternative to lime as a clean finish that covers the mitre joint and gives our frame the feel of bone or ivory. These again may be coloured to choice.

Our  range of hard woods  frames  are very popular with contemporary painters and print makers, in the range we carry solid walnut, cherry, oak, ash, beech, birch and Maple all of which we cut join and finish at our workshop in Tipperary. It is important to us that the manufacture of our frames in all carried out in house as we know just how are frames are put together and we can then ensure excellent quality throughout.

Conservation materials are used in our entire product to prevent corrosion of acid from wood pulp materials and we also offer UV protective anti-reflective glass that blocks up to 99% of harmful UV rays, which is a must for precious artworks and work that hangs in a very bright areas.

Each year we seek out innovation to bring the best quality and choice to our customers. This year is no different and we will be increasing our range of contemporary gilded frames which are finished with 23ct red or white gold, a chalk paint finish and shellac.
Carrying on the look of our sealed joint frames we are also introducing our own metal frames which will have a sealed invisible joint in polished steel and aluminium.

Over the last few years we have completed a great deal of work for developments such a s the Clarion Hotel in Cork, Farnham estate, The National State laboratories and Allied Irish bank centre Ballsbridge in Dublin the OPW along with the many exhibitions for Galleries and Artists nationwide.
