Mounting ArtFloat mounting works on paper such as artists prints and photographs, help to show the full paper edge with no loss of image. This gives quite a contemporary feel to the work when framed.
Works on paper can be "laid on" which is when the paper is attached directly to the moutboard usually from the top to prevent the paper from cockling. Raise and float is when the paper is raised off the surface of the moutboard to cast a slight shadow and is particularly nice when paper has a hand made or deckeled edge. |
Float Mount
Photographic prints and Works on paper can be floated or "laid on" which is when the paper is attached directly to the mount board usually from the top to prevent the paper from cockling.

Camile Souter oil on paper in a float and mount. Sometimes called an "Island mount" this method mixed a traditional window mount with a contemporary float mount where the window opening is greater than that of the paper size.

Raise & Float
Donald Teskey carborundum print published at Stoney Road Press. An example of a raise and float mount, where the paper is "raised" off the base mount in order to better show the deckled edge of the paper. The amount of the float ( the remaining border outside the paper edge) can be varied to any size depending on the work being mounted.
